Data checking procedure

1. On the data entry computer, go to the old data folder (to get there, you need to go to the Multiple Movies
Study folder, then I think go to the "old" folder, and in that folder should be something called "old data from
other computer" or something similar -- whoever gets there first can double check this for me).

2. Open any QPW (Quattro Pro) file.

3. Check for 4 things:

a. correct formatting (remember how when some of you selected the cell/row delimiters special characters
in the wrong order, you got a bunch of ^ all over the place instead of correct cell divisions?)

b. duplicate entries (remember how you only started checking for double e-mails partway through the
quarter?) To check this, you'll need to open the file, look for all the page numbers in the first column (e.g.,
1p.2) and see if there are any duplicate pages.

c. anything else weird that you notice

d. correct files (no errors)

4. Fix mistakes

a. if the formatting of the QPW file is incorrect, open the corresponding TXT file in Quattro Pro and redo
this part of the data entry (steps 9-12 on the data entry instruction sheet):

9. Open the text file.
10. Close the file (but leave the Quattro Pro program open).
11. Open the text document again. Go to recent files (File > ) and then choose the first file.
12. Set the cell and row delimiters.
a. When the dialog box appears, click on ~SSettings~T.
b. Under End of Row delimiters, deselect ~SReturn~T and choose ~SCustom~T with this character (type it): ~
c. Under Cell delimiters, deselect ~SSpace~T and choose ~SCustom~T with this character: ^
d. Click OK

Then, instead of saving it with the original name (which would overwrite the bad version), add "-correctformat" to
the end of the file name (e.g., 14DAN88SAN-correctformat.QPW) to save it as a new file. Then go on to check for
the other things (duplicate entries, etc.).

NOTE: to change a file name/add a tag, do "File > Save As..." from Quattro Pro, or from inside the data folder,
double click on the file name slowly or select the file and press F2 .

b. if there are duplicate entries, add "-dup" to the file name (e.g., 14DAN88SAN-dup.QPW). If the file
already has "-correctformat" at the end, add this tag afterward, e.g., 14DAN88SAN-correctformat-dup.QPW .

c. if there's something else weird you notice with the file, add an additional tag to the end of the file
name (e.g., 14DAN88SAN-only has Session 3 data in it.QPW)

d. if there are no errors in the file, add "-OK" to the file name (e.g., 14DAN88SAN-OK.QPW).

5. Move all the files you've checked to the "checked" folder inside the old data folder. (Whoever gets there
first will have to create this folder.) So if you've checked the files of 14DAN88SAN, move all that person's
files (including renamed files, TXT files, etc.) to the "checked" folder so no one wastes time rechecking them.

Entering Data

(click on above image to enlarge)

Transfer data
2. In the e-mail program (type “L” for folder view), choose a folder that hasn’t been entered yet (ID code with no underscore at the beginning; not “INBOX” or “sent”) and that has Session 3 data in it (~38 e-mails).
3. Open first e-mail and find section with data (usually 3 lines; use [Space] and - to move down and up a page in an e-mail).
4. Copy that section by highlighting it (it copies automatically).
5. Open word processor and paste in blank document (use ctrl-V). Put pages in order as you go. (Note: p.00 or p.0 comes before p.01, which comes before p.1, which comes before p.2, etc.)
6. Copy all data from all e-mails of the participant.
7. Rename the folder. (In the folder list view, with the folder selected, type “r” and then add an underscore at the beginning of the ID code, then type [Enter].)
8. Save document as a text file with the ID code as the name.
a. In WordPerfect, do File > Save As... And in “File type” choose “ANSI (Windows) Generic Word Processor (*.txt)”
b. In Word, do File > Save As...and in “Save as type:” choose “Plain Text”, then choose “Windows (Default)”. Save to the desktop Multiple Movies Study data folder.
9. Open the text file. (In the data folder in the desktop Multiple Movies Study folder, double click on the name of the *.txt file.)
10. Close the file (but leave the Quattro Pro program open).
11. Open the text document again. Go to recent files (File>) and then choose the first file.
12. Set the cell and row delimiters.
a. When the dialog box appears, click on “Settings”.
b. Under End of Row delimiters, deselect “Return” and choose “Custom” with this character (type it): ~
c. Under Cell delimiters, deselect “Space” and choose “Custom” with this character: ^
d. Click OK
13. Save the database file (ctrl-S or File > Save As...) with the ID code as the name (as file type Quattro Pro / QPW). Make sure the full name appears, without “~1" at the end.

Main commands in pine (e-mail program):
L Go to folder list view
↑ ↓ → ← Navigate to different e-mails or folders
(can also type n for next or p for previous from inside an e-mail)
> or , Go deeper into whatever you’ve selected
(e.g., go into folder from folder list, go into e-mail from e-mail list, etc.)
< or . Go up in directory structure
(go up to e-mail list from an e-mail, go up to folder list from e-mail list, go up to main menu from folder list)
[Space] Page down
- Page up
q Exit (follow with [Enter] key)
n From one e-mail, go to next e-mail
p From one e-mail, go to previous e-mail

You may have noticed that some of the e-mail folders (in the
e-mail program, with all the data) have "-old" at the end of their names.
The e-mails in those folders don't have the questionnaire number at the
beginning of each page number (i.e., normally in the e-mails, a page
number is in the format 1p.1, but these are just listed as, e.g., p.1).
So for those people's data, you'll need to figure out which questionnaire
each e-mail belongs to by the subject line, and you'll need to enter
e-mails in order of the sessions -- all the intro pages will need to be
entered & ordered first, then the Session 1 Premovie page, then all the
Session 1 Postmovie pages, etc.

Questionnaire Scoring Key

1st questionnaire: www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~rena/
other questionnaires: www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~rena/ ________ .html

In general:
• numbers go up from 1 (starting at the top left)
• selected checkboxes say “on”
• Any time there’s a text box (e.g., for “Other [please explain]”) there’s a separate variable for it
• question numbers with asterisks are reverse-coded
• variable names are mostly intuitive, but ignore the first digit of the question numbers (e.g., pa11 is #1, pa211 is #11)

1p0:
• male = 1, female = 0

1p2:
• all scores are reversed (A = 4, D = 1)

1p3:
• yes = 1, no = 0
• some are reverse-scored (asterisk)

1p5:
• correct = 1
• incorrect = a (top left), b (top right), c (bottom left), or d (bottom right)

1p6:
• “it’s perfectly okay” = 4 to “it’s really wrong”=1

1p7:
• some are reverse-scored (asterisk)

1p8:
• “A” answers get a point in questions with asterisk
• “B” answers get a point in questions without asterisk

3p01, 4p01, 6p01:
• main character = 1
• other character = 2

6p5:
• correct = 1
• incorrect = a (top left), b (top right), c (bottom left), or d (bottom right)

6p9:
• “yes, definitely” = 3 to “no, definitely not” = 0

Questionnaire numbering:
1: Intro questionnaire (q1 in on-line questionnaire URL)
2: Session 1 Premovie (q2 in on-line questionnaire URL)
3: Session 1 Postmovie (q4 in on-line questionnaire URL)
4: Session 2 Postmovie (q7 in on-line questionnaire URL)
5: Session 3 Premovie (q8 in on-line questionnaire URL)
6: Session 3 Postmovie (q10 in on-line questionnaire URL)

Instructions for testing the questionnaires

Go to the URLs at the top of the scoring key and print out all the questionnaires (or look at the questions on-line andcopy your answers onto paper as well as entering them on-line). Make sure to print or write the URL of each page sothat you know which page number it is. (In Firefox, do File > Print Preview, then click on "Page Setup...", then go to"Margins & Heater/Footer" tab, and under "Headers & Footers", "URL" should appear somewhere.) The page number appearsafter the "q" and before the ".html" in the URL; e.g.,https://maroon.site-secure.net/coneharvesters/rena/study/q1p9.html?survey=7,2,4 is p.9 of the intro questionnaire.

Complete the questionnaire on paper and copy your answers on-line (or do them on-line and then copy your answers ontopaper). When you fill in the forms on-line, make up an access code that begins with "RA" and an ID code that beginswith "RA" -- use the same codes throughout.

Find your data in the inbox and follow the "Entering Data" instructions with your data.

When your data are all entered into the Quattro Pro file, check to make sure that your answers on your paperquestionnaire match the data in the spreadsheet. First, go through your paper questionnaires and recode the answersthat need recoding (see Questionnaire Scoring Key, attached). Then check that they match the data in the spreadsheet.Make a note of any answers that don't match, and pass that info along to me ASAP.
